There are reasons for speedlimits on the roads in Québec: they’re full of potholes. If you were to drive any faster you’d risk wrecking your car!
Much of the infrastructure around Montréal was built quickly and is of questionable quality in many cases. This includes the way in which the roads have been built. Add into this the harsh winter climates and you have a recipe for potholes.
Once the snow melts all the potholes come out to play. Essentially water seems into cracks in the road, freezes and then melts. As it melts it expands, cracking the road and creating potholes.
This morning I saw someone from the city of La Prairie filling in a pothole in the road. I think that this Heath Robinson repair should keep the road in a reasonable condition until next winter!
