Looking for a job can be one of the most stressful and worrying things that one has to do. Our standard of living, security, how we’re perceived by others and our self-respect are intimately tied up with the work that we do.
Add to this a move to a new city or a new country and the task can seem great. The good news is that Montréal’s economy is doing quite well and there are jobs out there. As I write this, the world including Canada is still in the midst of a great global recession. Obviously this has effected the jobs market in Montréal.
The news is not so bad though. Yes, there have been many redundancies and layoffs here, but there are companies that are still hiring and looking for particular skills. Even at the low end of the service sector, there are many companies looking for staff and lots of “Nous Embauchons” (We’re Hiring) signs to be seen.
Economic activity in and around Montréal is both regional, domestic and international. The US represents the primary destination for exports from Québec so the health of companies here is still very much tied to the health of the US economy.
Signs are encouraging. Most people are coming around to the idea that green shoots of recovery will be seen towards the end of this year in the US economy and that will have an effect today in Montréal.
