Networking is the new buzzword in job seeking and new technologies are making it easier to network than ever before.
But let’s be clear – building a network with the sole goal of finding a job will not work. Moreover, it’s not honest and not a good way to start your life in Montréal.
Building a network is about helping others, contributing your knowledge and lending a hand when necessary. When you do this, people will understand how good you are and what you are capable of, so when you need a hand they’ll be ready to help. Networks are not for one time events, they are an on going means of helping a community.
It’s a good idea to start building your network before you come. You can do this by identifying people who have similar interests or careers as you and engage with them directly, on their blogs and through social networking tools. Leave intelligent and pertinent comments on people’s blogs.
LinkedIn is a great tool for finding both people and companies that share similar interests to you.
Use google to find activities and associations that are linked to Montréal and engage. You can also use facebook groups for this. Note that associations and interest groups need not necessarily be just business or profession based. It’s great to meet people who share your general interests too!
Write your own blog, demonstrate your expertise in your subject matter, be relevant and interesting. This blog, for example, tries to give information to the community of people who want to move to Montréal, to help others as many have helped me in my move.
Don’t forget of course Twitter which is another way of engaging and contributing to the community here in Montréal.
Once you are established as a contributer to your network in Montréal, people will help you in many ways during your move, notably when you need to find work.
