Ice Skating in Montréal

Ice skating is an important Canadian tradition that  most natives learn as children. It is of course an essential skill for playing the national sport of ice hockey.

As a new arrival in Montréal, you may not have had the opportunity to learn to skate before. So relocating to Montréal gives you the possibility to learn a new skill and partake in a new activity.

Summer is still in the air here mid-September, but the Autumn is easing in. It’s a perfect time to take up skating lessons before the winter freezes arrive in December. Many municipalities and private rinks will offer courses to some degree.

The beautiful Atrium 1000 skating rink has beginner’s lessons for both adults and children starting in this period. For 6 one hour sessions the cost is $75 for children and $125 for adults. Helmets (mandatory for the kids) and skates can be hired at the rink. The beauty of Atrium 1000, apart from it’s central location in downtown Montréal, is the setting including the restaurants around the rink and the general good atmosphere.

If you’re interested in procuring skates for the whole season, it is possible to rent or buy them at La Poubelle du Ski (located in Villeray). Renting is a great option for kids as after one season they will have outgrown their skates. The annual cost is a reasonable $20. For adults, you may wish to buy a pair as renting will cost $30 a season, a secondhand pair can be had for $50 and a new pair for around $90.

As the winter sets in, many municipalities will set up outdoor skating rinks. There are also ones in Montréal Old town and if you prefer a more natural setting, on top of the Mont-Royal.

Enjoy your skating!

  1. Hello!
    Re: Ice Skating in Mtl

What a great suggestion for new comers to Montreal!

Out of interest, I run a Montréal based company that has launched a new product for those little tykes (3-5 years old) learning to skate. Dynowear is a protective sports undergarment with padding that is designed to reduce the frequency and severity of sports and recreation related injuries. We designed it particularly for kids who are learning to skate.

Our product launch party was held at the Atrium last month to coincide with the start of skating lessons.

    Amy,

My daughter won your competition for a free set of Dynowear undergarments. She is very happy with them.
