This weekend Montréalers will be going to the polls to elect a new mayor. With three days to go before election date the three main candidates are neck to neck. Unfortunately, for most Montréalers the choice will not be an easy one to make.

The three main candidates are:

  • Gerald Tremblay is the incumbent candidate and is being accused, without any direct proof, of letting corruption go undealt with on his watch. On the positive side, he has launched the popular Bixi service, built the Quartier des Spectacles and balanced the city’s books.
  • Louise Harel has a somewhat mixed record following her previous stint in municipal government. She was behind a borough merger plan that was later reversed. She is also a Sovereigntist, desiring the independence of Québec and the Francisation of Montréal. She is not comfortable speaking in English. She is less tainted by corruption than Gerald Tremblay.
  • Richard Bergeron is the wild card in this election. His popularity is surprising, but is probably due to the disgust felt with the two other candidates. He has a green agenda and has been described as being “anti-car”.

There is no simple and clear choice for the people of Montréal. Each candidate has major disadvantages. Turn out, usually around 35% will probably be low. It’s a shame for the future of the city that the political parties couldn’t find better candidates than the ones they have fielded.

It will be seen on Monday who will lead Montréal into the next decade.
